The Faculty of Mechatronics was established in 1962 as a Division of Precise Mechanical Engineering. It is a multidisciplinary faculty conducting teaching and scientific activity in the area of the modern technical issues combining automatic control, electronics, information technology, mechanical engineering, robotics, optics or biomedical engineering. According to the definition given by the International Federation for the Theory of Machines and Mechanism, mechatronics is “a synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and concept systems in the design of products and manufacturing processes”. The Faculty consists of 3 separate organizational units: the Institute of Automatic Control and Robotics, the Institute of Metrology and Biomedical Engineering and the Institute of Micromechanics and Photonics. The Faculty of Mechatronics cooperates with scientific centres in the country and abroad, including co-organization of international seminars, conferences and workshops, such as the international MECHATRONICS conference, which is co-organized by the Faculty since 1990.
